4 Who Clung To Capsized Boat For Hours Rescued

DEAL ISLAND, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Natural Resources Police say four were rescued after clinging for hours onto a capsized boat off Deal Island.

Sgt. Brian Albert tells The Daily Times of Salisbury says the boat's owner, 70-year-old John Riggs of Salisbury, swam to shore wearing a life jacket and alerted authorities about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Albert says five people on a fishing trip were aboard when the boat capsized during a storm. He says the four boaters clung to the 16-foot Carolina Skiff motorboat about five hours before help arrived.

Searchers from the U.S. Coast Guard and local fire departments and police found the boaters off the Chesapeake Bay near Deal Island in far western Somerset County. Firefighters brought the boaters to shore.

Albert says the boaters' life jackets saved them.
