S.C. Woman Dies After Kayak Overturns On The Potomac River

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) -- A Montgomery County fire official says a woman died after her kayak overturned on the Potomac River near Great Falls.

Assistant Chief Scott Graham says rescuers searched the river after receiving a report of two kayakers in trouble on Thursday afternoon. He says they were able to reach one man, but they could not find the woman.

Montgomery County Police said Friday that the woman was trying to kayak down the falls and was pinned under the water.

A group of fellow kayakers worked with the fire department to recover the woman's body from the river.

Police identified the victim as 23-year-old Shannon Christy of Greenville, S.C.

Chuck Thornton, an organizer of this weekend's Great Falls Race for kayakers, says Christy had come to town to participate in the race.
