Group Drops Effort To Bring Elk Back To Md.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A statewide sportsmen's group says it's dropping an effort to reintroduce elk to western Maryland.

The Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Foundation said Wednesday there isn't enough local support for the idea.

Vice Chairman Bill Miles says the group found strong support statewide for the concept it announced nearly two years ago. But he says stakeholders in Allegany and Garrett counties were largely opposed due to fears of increased vehicle collisions, crop damage and animal disease.

The Garrett County Commissioners publicly opposed the idea. The Allegany County government took no official position.

Miles says his group might revive the idea in the future.
