Gansler Holds Forum On Re-Entry For Ex-Offenders

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler is calling for reforms to help people who have served prison sentences re-enter society to be productive.

Gansler held a forum on the subject in Baltimore on Monday.

The attorney general has outlined 10 recommendations. He says a deputy secretary of public affairs and correctional services should be established to focus on re-entry concerns. Gansler also is advocating for closer work between offenders and social workers to make the transition.

Another recommendation is to create courts specialized in reducing recidivism.

Gansler also is advocating for detailed cost-benefit analysis to examine the relationship between reducing recidivism and saving money on corrections costs.

This is the fourth forum Gansler has held as he prepares to announce he is running for governor.
