Injured Soldier On 1st Deployment To Afghanistan Dies In Md.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- The Defense Department says a 26-year-old soldier from Mill City, Ore., has died of injuries suffered in Afghanistan.

The department said Spc. Nickolas Welch died Tuesday in Bethesda, Md., of injuries sustained on July 23, when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Wardak Province.

Welch was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga.

KATU-TV reports he was on his first deployment and joined the Army in August 2010.
