New Assistant Adjutant General For Md. Army Guard

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Maryland Army National Guard is getting a new leader.

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Thursday that Brig. Gen. Linda Singh will serve as the Maryland Army National Guard's next assistant adjutant general, replacing Brig. Gen. Peter Hinz, who retires in September. Officials say Singh, 49, will be the first female and first African-American in the post.

Singh, who currently serves as director of the Maryland National Guard joint staff, recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan and served in Kosovo in 2006 and 2007. She was an enlisted soldier for 11 years. Her military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal.

In civilian life Singh is a managing director with Accenture Federal Services in the public safety portfolio.
