BALTIMORE (AP) — The first male president of Notre Dame of Maryland University is stepping down, citing family reasons.

The school said Friday that James Conneely, who was named president last year, planned to return with his family to their former home in Kentucky.

Joan Develin Coley, president emerita of McDaniel College, has been selected to serve as interim president while a search committee seeks a permanent president.

Notre Dame of Maryland University was found in Baltimore in 1895 and is the nation’s first Catholic women’s college to award baccalaureate degrees. It is also open to men older than 22.
