Anne Arundel Schools Train Dozens Of Bus Drivers

SEVERN, Md. (AP) -- It's crunch time for training school bus drivers as about 78,000 students prepare to return to classes soon in Anne Arundel County.

The Capital reports the county school system will have trained 51 new school bus drivers between June 1 and the end of August. The school system has a School Bus Driver Training Center located in Severn.

Two or three drivers are trained at a time to acquaint them with every aspect of their 40-foot yellow school buses. They learn to park, turn around, negotiate turns and handle traffic. New drivers also learn about the mechanics of their buses. The drivers also have 32 hours of classroom instruction time.

Last year, county school buses transported more than 55,000 students. This year, it will be about 57,500.
