LAUREL, Md. (WJZ) — Two vicious dog attacks in an Anne Arundel County neighborhood. A group of little girls and a woman are wounded.
Monique Griego has more on why they want the owner held responsible.
According to police, the dog got out through an open gate. Neighbors tell WJZ this isn’t the first time he’s attacked someone.
A terrifying experience for a group of little girls Wednesday. As they walked with their aunt down Dameron South in Laurel, a pit bull terrier mix darted from a yard and attacked them.
“My first instinct was save my nieces. And they were scattered everywhere running from the dog. So it was hard,” said Samerial Johns.
Samerial Johns says the dog got out through an open gate, and within seconds, got a hold of two of her nieces–ages three and five.
“He bit the back of my niece’s neck. And then the other one, he grabbed her shirt and dragged her,” Johns said.
Anne Arundel County Police and Animal Control responded to the scene and seized the dog. They say it did not have a current rabies vaccination.
And according to police, the dog had already attacked someone else earlier that same day.
“Investigators also learned that there was a 66-year-old female taking out the trash earlier who sustained some injuries from this same dog,” police said.
But that wasn’t the end of it. Several neighbors told WJZ the dog has escaped and gone after people on multiple occasions.
“The dog had jumped on my wife and jumped on my grandson. Luckily, they had a stick to beat him off,” said Eddie Norman, neighbor.
Norman says he reported the attack, but nothing happened. WJZ went to the owner’s house, but he wasn’t home.
Johns says she’s horrified because the owner is already fighting to get the dog back.
“My nieces are all bandaged up from the blood and the scrapes. And he saw them and he still vouched for his dog, and to keep his dog,” said Johns.
Animal Control has taken over the case. It will determine what happens to the dog and whether the owner will face any charges.
The girls have minor injuries. They are expected to be OK.
