Matt Yallof of the MLB Network joined Zinno on “Last Call” to talk some of the bigger baseball headlines and the Orioles chances at the post-season. Alex Rodriguez continues to dominate news as Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster, who hit Rodriguez with a pitch Sunday night, was suspended for five games by the league for the incident. Yallof feels that the punishment wasn’t enough. “I don’t know what kind of message that sends,” he said.
The Orioles continue to struggle and both Zinno and Yallof point to the bullpen as one of the problems. After a 29-9 record in one-run games last year, the Birds have come back down to Earth. “The difference is, what they did last year is not normal. They rode it all the way,” said Yallof. He also added that the starting pitchers still need to go deeper in games.
As far as the playoffs are concerned, the Orioles are still in the hunt. Yalloff said, “This team has the talent to go back to the playoffs. They have the talent to. They have the manager to. They have the defense to do it. They have the offense to do it.” He follwed that up by reminding the listeners that the Orioles still control their own destiny because they still play the Red Sox and the Rays a combined 13 more times before the regular season ends.
