Ocean City Agrees To Abolish Metered Parking

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Ocean City officials plan to abolish new metered parking installed earlier this summer.

The Daily Times of Salisbury says the council voted 5-2 to repeal the law that created the new paid parking spots and will consider an emergency ordinance at its next meeting to formally get rid of the meters.

The move comes after Ocean City voters collected 1,648 signatures to stop the metered parking and restore free areas.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan says the meters are being removed and that no new meters will be installed as long as he's mayor.

The meters were installed as the resort grappled with a $1.2 million budget shortfall and was looking for new ways to add revenue.
