Boat Catches Fire, Sinks Off Ocean City; 2 Rescued

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- A fire broke out on a sport fishing boat, and it sank just off the coast of Ocean City.

Coast Guard officials say the 46-foot Sea Witch boat caught fire just before 3 p.m. Saturday. Two passengers were rescued by a nearby charter boat.

Shane McGinnis, captain of the Salty Sons charter boat, tells The Daily News that smoke was billowing from the burning vessel. McGinnis could barely see people on the back deck as his boat approached. McGinnis says he and his family were able to pull a man and women onto the charter boat.

McGinnis says the damaged boat sank when a giant wave hit it as a tow boat was preparing to pull it to shore.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
