Striking Trash Collector Hit By Garbage Truck

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) -- A trash collector on strike in Montgomery County was struck by a garbage truck being driven by a temporary worker.

Montgomery County police say the driver was starting to begin his daily runs Wednesday morning when he drove up onto a curb and hit the striking worker. The worker was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was charged with failing to control speed to avoid a collision.

Fifty-seven workers for the Gaithersburg-based Potomac Disposal went on strike Monday.

The newly unionized workers say they have been pressing for health benefits and the company has retaliated with immigration enforcement threats.

Potomac Disposal is one of three companies the county uses for trash service.
