Annual Woolly Bear Caterpillar Contest Opens In Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- It's caterpillar contest time in Hagerstown.

The Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack opens its annual contest Thursday, Oct. 10. The nation's second-oldest almanac has for more than 30 years of tradition collecting woolly bear caterpillars for their supposed ability to forecast winter weather.

Contestants have to take their woolly bear entries to the Sonic restaurant at 1710 Dual Highway in Hagerstown between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. The entrants who submit the cuddliest and biggest woolly bear caterpillars will each get $100 and a gift from Sonic, but every contestant who brings in a woolly bear caterpillar will get a free vanilla ice cream cone. Entries will be accepted until Nov. 15.

The Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack is second in longevity to the Old Farmer's Almanac.
