Scott Garceau: NFL View From Third Street
With about a third of the NFL regular season in the books the standings are starting to mean something. The difference between 2-0 and 0-2 seems miles apart going into week 3 but it takes 16 games in 17 weeks to shake this out.
If we go to Dennis Green's school of "They are who we thought they were" it's still too early to "go ahead and crown their asses." Too early for the crown but not too early to make some observations. As Yogi put it "You can observe a lot just by watching."
"How 'Bout That" Teams
Saints (5-0) After a 7-9 finish last year, Sean Payton is back and Drew Brees is the best thing this side of Peyton Manning.
Chiefs (5-0) Andy Reid is a good man and a good coach. The Chiefs have won 3 more games than they did all of last season. Lets just say they win the Super Bowl, would all sharp items need to be removed from Philadelphia?
Browns (3-2) I know 3-2 is modest but not if your football is played on the shores of Lake Erie. Since the new Browns were born in 1999 The Dawg Pound has been bad to the bone. The Browns have 3 more wins than the Steelers and are tied for first place.
Jets (3-2) Didn't I hear that Mark Sanchez and the Jets were going to be the worst team in the NFL. Enter rookie Geno Smith, three wins and a 3-point loss at New England later Rex Ryan has a tough competitive football team.
Train Wreck Teams
Giants (0-6) The worst team in the NFL's worst division. Eli Manning is a turnover machine, he already has 15 interceptions 8 of those in the 4th quarter. I actually thought the Giants might win the division. Sorry!
Steelers (0-4) Think there might be an unwritten rule that the Pirates and Steelers can't win at the same time? For Pittsburgher's the Pirates revival takes some sting out of the Steelers demise.
Falcons (1-4) A top contender for the NFC title now 4 games behind the Saints with Julio Jones lost for the season.
Matty Ice and his Falcons are ice cold.
Buccaneers (0-4) A winless team with way too much drama. Josh Freeman is gone will Greg Schiano survive?
Jacksonville (0-5) Worst of the worst. Jags have been outscored by 22 points game. Good luck in Denver Sunday!
