Md. Rural Counties Group Plans Economic Summit

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A coalition of rural counties is planning an economic summit next month in Annapolis to get the word out about the importance of rural communities to Maryland's economy.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition plans the summit for Nov. 15 at the Governor Calvert House as part of the organization's annual meeting.

The coalition now includes 10 member counties: Allegany, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Frederick, Kent, Somerset, Washington and Wicomico counties.

Allegany County Commission President and coalition Chairman Michael McKay has said the organization is not meant to be a rival to the Maryland Association of Counties, but there is a need for the rural coalition as an independent organization.
