GARRETT COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — It’s a fast start to Maryland’s black bear hunt.

Since the season was reopened in 2004, Monday’s first day set a new record.

Hunters in far Western Maryland killed 41 black bears, topping the previous record of 38 in a single day.

Department of Natural Resources biologists expect this year’s quota of 98 to 130 bears to be quickly met, with hunting conditions said to be perfect.

Alex DeMetrick will have more on this story at 5 and 6 p.m.
