Man Convicted Of Shooting Off-Duty Officer

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — A jury has convicted a man of shooting an off-duty Prince George’s County police officer in the leg outside a Hyattsville nightclub where she was working a security job.

Prosecutors say Kelly Gilliss was convicted of first-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and using a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence.

Police say Gilliss was kicked out of the Galaxy nightclub on University Boulevard in July 2012 after he was accused of taking someone else’s phone.

Prosecutors say that as Gilliss exited the parking lot he slowed in an area where three police officers were standing and fired five shots, hitting one of them.

Gilliss is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 23.  He faces up to 55 years in prison.
