Newly Hired Correctional Officer Charged After Drug Sting

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson says a newly hired county correctional officer has been arrested after buying Oxycodone from an undercover officer.

The Cumberland Times-News reports William Smith, 26, of Frostburg was arrested Thursday.

Smith is charged with conspiracy of a controlled dangerous substance possession with intent to distribute, conspiracy of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to deliver in a place of confinement and other offenses.

The sheriff asked the Combined County Criminal Investigation narcotics unit for help after the detention center received information that a new officer may be involved in illegal activity.

An undercover narcotics officer arranged to meet Smith and officials say Smith was arrested after he allegedly bought Oxycodone from the officer.
