Deputy Shot During Firearms Exercise

PINEY POINT, Md. (AP) -- The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says a deputy was shot during firearms training.

It happened Wednesday at the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship firearms training facility in Piney Point. Deputies say Detective Cpl. David Alexander was taking part in a live-fire exercise when he sustained a gunshot wound.

Authorities say Alexander, a 13-year veteran of the department, was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he was treated and released.

The incident is under investigation.
