Veteran Baltimore Officer Pleads Guilty To Extortion

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore police officer has pleaded guilty to extortion after prosecutors alleged she provided protection for a purported drug trafficker.

Ashley Roane, 26, of Pikesville also pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft for providing information on people who were arrested to alleged conspirators who used it to file fraudulent tax returns.

Roane entered the pleas Wednesday in federal court in Baltimore. If the judge accepts the plea deal, prosecutors say a sentence of between 60 and 111 months is appropriate.

According to her plea, Roane, a five-year veteran of the police department, stood watch in her uniform while a person purportedly got heroin from a vehicle provided by the FBI. That person was actually an informant.
