Britt Ghiroli from MLB.com joined Zinno to talk about the latest rumors about the Orioles possibly trading catcher Matt Wieters and shortstop JJ Hardy. Ghiroli said that she felt the rumors were just that. It is posturing before the winter meetings coming up next week.
It is hard to determine Matt Wieters value. Because he had a down year offensively in many categories, he won’t be worth as much in the trade market. Should the Orioles try and move him, they won’t be doing so for a perennial All-Star that will command a big contract in a year or two. They could just spend that same money on keeping him.
While the Orioles say they are only listening to offers and not actively shopping anyone, it could send a message to fans that they have no desire to try and keep Wieters, either by signing him to an extension or being part of his free agent process. It could be a bad sign. or it could just be that the team has designs on spending that money on some of their other young stars.
