7-Year-Old's Plea Prompts Park Bathroom Openings

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Officials in Hagerstown will open some park restrooms on nice days in November after a request from a 7-year-old girl.

Seven-year-old  Avery Byard wrote the mayor after visiting City Park and finding the bathrooms closed for the winter.

Avery told the mayor that her family had to go home because her brother had to use the bathroom.

Now, officials say they will open the restrooms at City Park on days when the temperature rises above 45 degrees through November.

The bathrooms and others were previously closed in part because park attendants that check on them are seasonally employed and released in mid-October.

Full-time staff will open and close the restrooms on nice days in November.
