C&O Canal Support Group Backs Education Program
WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) -- A group that supports the C&O Canal National Historical Park says it's donating more money to a program that brings students to the canal.
The C&O Canal Trust is donating $33,000 to the Canal Classrooms program Friday in Williamsport. The group gave $17,000 to the program last spring.
The trust says the funds will be used to expand the capacity for on-site education at the visitor center in Williamsport.
The program brings students to the park to learn about the history and engineering of the canal.
The C&O Canal parallels the Potomac River for nearly 185 miles from Washington to Cumberland. A towpath once used by barge-pulling mules is now a popular hiking and biking trail.
