Maryland Women's Hoops Coach Frese Signs Extension

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Maryland women's basketball coach Brenda Frese has signed a four-year extension to her contract, which now runs through 2021.

The deal, announced Friday, includes the potential for four additional years.

Frese took over at Maryland in 2002 and won the national championship in 2006. Entering Friday night's game against No. 1 Connecticut, Frese compiled a 280-81 record with the Terrapins.

Maryland has won two Atlantic Coast Conference titles under her direction and advanced five times to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. The Terrapins reached that point last season before losing to Connecticut, the eventual national champion.

Athletic director Kevin Anderson said the extension "will enable us to remain as one of the top programs in the country for many years to come."

Maryland is currently ranked eighth.
