D.C.’s Panda Cub Has Taken Its First Steps

WASHINGTON (AP) — The giant panda cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo has taken its first steps.

Zoo officials say the female cub has been observed standing up and taking a few steps before sitting down and crawling.

On Sunday, the nearly 3-month-old cub almost crawled out of its den all by itself, but it got tired and went to sleep in the doorway.

The cub now weighs about the same as a human baby — 10.3 pounds.

The next major milestone comes on Dec. 1, when the cub reaches 100 days old. That’s when its name will be announced. The zoo is allowing the public to choose the name from five options through an online poll. More than 99,000 people have voted.
