Burning Man Runs Into Ocean City Church, Causing Double Fatal Fire

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Ocean City officials say a man whose clothes and body were on fire ran into the rectory of an Episcopal church, causing a fire in the building that killed the church’s pastor.

Authorities identified the man Wednesday as 56-year-old John Sterner. According to town officials, investigators believe Sterner was covered in a flammable substance. He died at the scene.

The pastor, the Rev. David Dingwall, died at a hospital after the fire. A woman who volunteers at the church was critically injured and is being treated at a burn center in Baltimore.

Dingwall was a native of Canada who became rector of St. Paul’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in 2005. He is survived by his wife, their son and her two sons from a previous marriage.
