Man Killed In Gunfire Exchange With D.C. Officer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A man who was shot by a District of Columbia police officer in an exchange of gunfire has died.

Police say the officer was also shot but was not seriously wounded.

Police say the shooting happened Tuesday night in the Trinidad neighborhood of northeast Washington.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier says officers with the police department's gun recovery unit were in the neighborhood when the shooting took place. Police say officers tried to stop a man, who produced a handgun and fired at the officers, hitting one of them.

A police department spokeswoman said Wednesday that the man who was shot has died. He was identified as 19-year-old Darius Jamal Murphy of Washington.
