Police Officer Shoots Woman Wielding Knife

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Hyattsville City Police say an officer shot a woman who threatened him with a knife in the basement of her home.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, when officers were called to the home for a mental health welfare check.

Police say the woman refused to leave the basement and refused repeated orders to remove her hands from her pockets.

Authorities say the woman then displayed a knife in a threatening manner toward the officers. Officials say an officer deployed a stun gun, but it had no effect because the woman was wearing several layers of clothes.

Police say an officer fired one shot, hitting the woman in the chest. Authorities say she underwent surgery at a local hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
