Franklin High School Earns Its 1st State Title With 20-7 Win Over Linganore

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Jacquez Adams threw two touchdown passes and Kiandre Burrell ran for another score as Franklin earned its first state title with a 20-7 win over Linganore Thursday night in the Class 3A championship game.

Franklin (12-2) scored the game's final 20 points and finished the season on a 10-game winning streak. The Indians lost in their other two title game appearances, the last one in 2010.

Adams completed nine of 17 passes for 117 yards and the two touchdowns. He also ran for 41 yards. Darius Hinton led Franklin with 110 yards rushing and Franklin finished with 339 yards of total offense.

Linganore (12-2), going for a fifth state title, moved the ball well and rushed for 200 yards -- led by Phillip Butler's 110 -- but couldn't make enough big plays.

Butler put the Lancers up early when he scored on a 16-yard run with 10:14 left in the first half. Kyle Parsons added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Franklin took over after that. Adams threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Steven Smothers, and Brian Bray's extra point made it 7-7 with 8:32 remaining in the half.

The Indians took the lead for good when Adams found Smothers again, this time with a 27-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone. That came with 3:35 left in the third quarter, and Bray's kick made it 14-7.

Adams then led Franklin on an 11-play, 98-yard drive that ended with Burrell's 6-yard scoring run with 6:03 remaining to make it 20-7.
