Cumberland Airport Bans Car Races On Tarmac

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Managers of the Greater Cumberland Airport say they'll no longer allow car races on the tarmac.

The Potomac Highlands Airport Authority has declined a request from National Road Autosports to continue holding events at the airport.

The authority says the car races could jeopardize funding from the Federal Aviation Administration for improvement and expansion projects.

The airport received a $2.3 million FAA grant in September for runway rehabilitation.

The Cumberland airport hasn't had scheduled air service since 2003 but the airport is used for general aviation.

The auto sports group has held events at the airport since 2002. Car races were also held at the airport from 1953 to 1970.

National Road Autosports President John Felten says the group may challenge the decision.
