Cecil County Allows KKK Meeting In County Building
ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- Cecil County officials are defending their decision to allow a Ku Klux Klan membership meeting in a county building.
The News Journal of Wilmington, Del. reports that the Confederate White Knights of Rosedale, Md., was scheduled to meet Friday night at the county administration building in Elkton.
Administration Director Al Wein says the county has a duty under the First Amendment to make its facilities available for the peaceful exercise of free speech and assembly rights. He says the county's action is not an endorsement of the white separatist group or its message.
The group limits its membership to American-born heterosexuals of European heritage, excluding Muslims and Jews. It advocates the impeachment of President Barack Obama.
County Commissioners President Robert Hodge is urging people not to attend the meeting.
