Del. Cardin Proposes Concussion Pilot Program

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Del. Jon Cardin is proposing a pilot program to test how well athletic helmet impact sensors work for high school athletes.

Cardin announced Monday he plans to introduce legislation to create the program. He says the cost of the program and the impact sensors would be paid for by the sensor manufacturers to reduce costs to school districts.

Cardin says that while Maryland passed a comprehensive concussion prevention program in 2010, there are few objective measures for determining when an athlete has suffered a concussion to trigger the law requiring the athlete to be taken out of a sporting event.

Cardin says impact sensors would create a reliable mechanism to show when an athlete has suffered a large impact to the head.

Cardin, a Democrat, is running for attorney general.
