Baltimore Health Dept. Warns Of Hypothermia Risk
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Public Health Department is warning of an increased risk of hypothermia from frigid temperatures.
The agency issued a Code Blue alert Tuesday. The alert was initially extended through Wednesday, but on Tuesday afternoon, health officials extended it through Saturday.
During a Code Blue alert, agencies work together to protect the homeless and other vulnerable populations.
During the alert period, the city will operate a 60-bed center at 620 Fallsway for those seeking meals and sleeping quarters.
The city is urging private homeless shelters to extend their hours and keep people indoors.
The National Weather Service predicts overnight temperatures as low as 8 degrees Tuesday and 5 degrees Wednesday.
The Baltimore Public Health Department says two of the seven cold-related deaths in Maryland this winter have been in Baltimore.
