Ruppersberger Won't Run For Governor, Seeks Re-election To Congress

WASHINGTON (WJZ)— Democratic Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger,  announced Wednesday that he will not run for governor in 2014. Instead he will file as a candidate for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ruppersberger, who has represented Maryland's second district since 2003, released the following statement:

"I will run for re-election as a member of the House of Representatives to continue my work on behalf of my district and my country. I have worked to create jobs, protect veterans and seniors from dangerous budget cuts and ensure our communities get the federal resources they need. As ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, I have oversight over many national security issues, which has a direct impact on Maryland businesses and families.

"I will also continue to push for change in Washington.  More than ever, our national government needs moderate voices and officials who put common sense before politics. I hope the recent bipartisan budget deal can be a first step toward compromise on larger issues such as tax and entitlement reform as well as long-term deficit reduction. I will ask second district voters to allow me to continue my work on these and other critical issues facing our nation, and to be a strong voice for the people I am honored to represent.

"I want to thank the many Marylanders who encouraged me to run for governor.  I was humbled by their enthusiasm, faith and financial commitments.  Their encouragement and confidence made me think long and hard about this choice.

"I am a lifelong Baltimore resident, a graduate of City College and a passionate Terp. Baltimore is part and parcel of who I am. Like many, I am looking for a candidate that can harness its unique opportunities and challenges. I will closely monitor how the candidates intend to strengthen the region and I look forward to working with the next governor to implement those plans."

Ruppersberger is ranking member of the Intelligence Committee. He formerly was Baltimore County Executive.

The second district includes parts of Baltimore City and parts of Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Harford and Howard counties.
