Hogan Chooses Boyd Rutherford As Running Mate
RIVA, Md. (AP) -- Republican candidate Larry Hogan named Boyd Rutherford as his running mate on Wednesday night in Maryland's GOP primary race for governor.
Like Hogan, Rutherford was a member of former Gov. Robert Ehrlich's cabinet. Rutherford was secretary of the Maryland Department of General Services. Hogan served as secretary of appointments during the Ehrlich administration from 2003 to 2007.
In a speech to supporters, Rutherford criticized tax increases under Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration and called for a change in direction for the state.
Rutherford said Maryland families are not comfortable with the numerous tax, fee and toll increases in the last seven years.
"Those families are not comfortable with shrinking job opportunities for their adult children as they watch employers, including Fortune 500 companies and 6,500 small businesses, pack up and leave Maryland for other states where career politicians don't treat them like unwanted guests," the candidate for lieutenant governor said in his prepared remarks.
Rutherford also has worked as associate administrator for the U.S. General Services Administration and as assistant secretary for administration at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Rutherford, who lives in Columbia, is married and has three adult children.
Maryland's primary is scheduled for June 24. Hogan is running against Harford County Executive David Craig, Del. Ron George and Charles County businessman Charles Lollar.
