Epic Moments In Ravens Super Bowl History

Since 1996 the Baltimore Ravens have had their ups and downs just like every other franchise. They have been lucky enough to make it to two Super Bowls in the last thirteen years. In those two championship games the Ravens have had some pretty epic moments to say the least. Here's a look at a few of those memorable of those plays:

Brandon Stokley sets the tone with a 38-yard reception for a TD

Brandon Stokley caught a 38-yard pass from Trent Dilfer to score the first points of Super Bowl XXXV during first quarter action at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Stokley was covered by New York Giants' cornerback Jason Sehorn, whose jersey-tug attempt to tackle Stokley couldn't keep him out of the endzone. The play was set up by a great return from Jermaine Lewis, moved back by a holding penalty but it still only took the Ravens 2 plays to get on the board.

Duane Starks picks-off Collins for 6-points

After halftime the Ravens were leading 10-0. After a punt, an interception by Kim Herring that lead to a missed field goal by Matt Stover and another exchange of punts, Duane Starks intercepted a pass from Kerry Collins and returned it 49 yards for a score. The Ravens defense did what they had done all season, force turnovers and score points.

Jermaine Lewis answers with 84-yard kickoff return

After the Duane Starks pick-6 the Giants finally answered. Ron Dixon returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, giving the Giants a glimmer of hope. That hope wouldn't last very long at all. For the 3rd consecutive play there was another touchdown scored. Jermaine Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens fielded the kickoff and ran it back 84 yards for a touchdown. This was the first time in history that there had been two kickoffs for scores in a game, let alone back-to-back plays. This score crushed the moral of the Giants and they didn't score again in the game.

Ray Lewis is Super Bowl XXXV MVP

After one of the most lopsided Super Bowl victories in NFL history due to the Baltimore defense not allowing the NY Giants offense to score even once, Ray Lewis was declared Super Bowl MVP. In his 5th season, Ray had already established himself as one of the greats to play Middle Linebacker. The 2000 Ravens D was one of the best 16-game single-seasons in NFL history. They allowed the fewest points in one 16-game season (165), fewest rushing yards allowed (970), and 4 shutouts (one shy of the single season record) all behind the leadership of Lewis. He was also named Defensive Player of the Year for the 2000 season.

Anquan Boldin starts Super Bowl XLVII with 13-yard score

As he did all season for the Ravens, Anquan Boldin comes up with a big catch up the middle.  The Red Zone was Boldin's forte.  The drive would have stalled completely if it weren't for an offsides call Ahmad Brooks on 3rd down. So instead of a fieldgoal, the Ravens get a touchdown and go up 7-0 to start the game.

Jacoby Jones 56-yard Catch, Fall, Get Up, Run & Dive for a TD

Jacoby Jones isn't always known for his grace and sure-footedness. He really hadn't been known for sure-handedness either. In the game against Denver he caught Joe Flacco's last minute Hail Mary pass like he would catch a punt.  Joe Flacco threw him another long ball in the Super Bowl and the resulting catch and run was unforgettable. The refs did a great job not whistling the play dead when Jacoby hit the ground. The guys in black and white knew as well as Jones did that he was untouched as he got back up, evaded a few pursuers and dove into the end-zone.

Jacoby Jones Record-Setting 108-Yard 2nd-Half-Opening Touchdown-Scoring Kickoff Return

The 2nd half kicked off and Jacoby Jones was ready to make another play. He paced the end zone like a Tiger paces his cage. He fielded the ball 8-yards deep in the end zone and decided to bring it out.  Turns out that was a pretty good decision after all because he proceeded to take it to the house for the longest play in Super Bowl history, 108 yards.  Add in the extra point and Baltimore had the lead, 28-6 straight out of the gate in the second half.

The Blackout: Conspiracy Theorists Unite:
It was looking like a blow out just after halftime,  the Ravens were up 28-6 following Jacoby Jones' KO Return TD...then the lights went out. Play was interrupted for 34 minutes while players milled around & announcers fumbled to fill time. When the  lights came back on the 49ers put up 17 consecutive points as momentum changed, and big.  Some have talked conspiracy and not just anguished fans - Ray Lewis got in on the act.

No Flags: Ravens make Trademark Goal Line Stand to hold on to Lead

San Fran came all the way back & with 4:19 left in regulation the Ravens held a 5 point lead. Only a Touchdown would win it for the 'niners & Ravens fans held their collective breaths as Kaepernick had his offense on the Ravens 7 yard line with  2 minutes to go. An epic defensive stand by the Ravens coupled with some questionable play calls & execution by the 49ers (and NO FLAGS on a 4th down pass) turned it back over to the Ravens with seconds left on the clock.

Intentional Safety? Best play call EVER?

Seemingly nobody on the 49ers were looking for it, but an intentional safety by the Ravens had the  the Ravens turning to.....the punter? Yes, to Sam Koch to seal the game. After taking the snap Koch danced around the end zone while a confused 49ers team was late to react. Koch was able to eat valuable time off the clock before being forced out with 4 seconds left leaving the 49ers with no chance to time to come back. Ravens were Champs!
