Girl, 10, Impaled By Metal Rod In Sledding Accident

JARRETTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a 10-year-old girl is in serious condition after she was impaled by a metal rod while sledding in Jarrettsville, north of Baltimore.

The Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association says the girl was hurt Monday while sledding near the intersection of Anderson Lane and Dulaney Drive.

The association says Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company workers found the girl impaled in the back by a piece of rebar protruding from the ground. It took firefighters nearly 20 minutes to saw through the rebar so the girl could be taken to a hospital.

Harford County public schools were closed before noon Monday because of a winter storm.
