Cardin Bill Favors Orioles, Other Migratory Birds

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin is pushing a conservation bill favoring the Baltimore oriole and other migratory birds.

The Maryland Democrat said Thursday that the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee approved his bill to reauthorize the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act.

The act promotes long-term conservation, education, research, monitoring and habitat protection for more than 350 bird species. Re-authorization would provide funding for the research.

The act was last reauthorized in 2006 for fiscal years 2006 to 2010. Cardin has been seeking another re-authorization for several years.

He says the program is a good value because it supports the hobby of bird watching.
