Fishing Season Bill Delayed For Summer Study

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A House committee is holding off on a bill that would clarify the Department of Natural Resources' authority to modify fishing seasons by public notice.

This bill led to a delay in the nomination of Joseph Gill as DNR secretary.

A recent public hearing revealed "wide differences of opinion" about how the state should manage fisheries, said DNR spokeswoman Karis King.

Gill, the DNR's interim secretary, told the president of the waterman's association that if this bill didn't pass, he would compensate by cutting fishing quotas.

Because of Gill's remark, Sen. Richard Colburn asked last week to delay Gill's nomination vote.

Gill has asked the House Environmental Matters Committee to designate the bill for summer study, King said.
