HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Hampton took its first lead of the second half on a free throw from Emmanual Okoroba with more than five minutes left in the game, then pulled away for a 71-65 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore Monday Night.

Hakeem Baxter hit back-to-back 3-pointers that cut the Hampton lead to two, 67-65 with under a minute to play, but Deron Powers made a layup and Ke’Ron Brown added a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to preserve the victory.

Two-time MEAC player of the week DuVaughn Maxwell paced the Pirates (13-11, 8-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with 17 points and 14 rebounds, despite struggling from the free throw line (1 of 8). Ramon Mercado added 13 points and Brown 11.

KyRee Jones tossed in 27 points to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore (3-18, 1-8), hitting 12 of 13 attempts from the line. Baxter added 16 points.
