Casey Cares Invites 50 Families Of Kids Battling Health Issues To 'Believe It Or Not'

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The families of children who are battling life threatening health issues long for their lives to return to normal.

As Mike Schuh reports, a local nonprofit tried to make that happen on Monday.

Ripley's Believe It Or Not Odditorium at the Inner Harbor features the seemingly impossible.

"I thought it would be pretty cool," said Brianna King.

Brianna, a third-grader, is pretty cool. She's survived blood cancer.

On Monday, she spent the day at Ripley's thanks to the nonprofit, Casey Cares.

Fifty children and their families were invited to Ripley's. Some of them are now well.

"So many times our families get ready for the morning to go to the hospital, to go to doctor's appointments, needle pricks, you know the drill. And today is not that day," said Casey Baynes, Casey Cares Foundation. "Today they got up full of excitement because they were going to do something like every other child does."

Brianna's mom agrees. Such days are needed to get away from the constant stress and financial drain that comes with a life- changing health battle.

"To be able to participate in an event, to be around children who understand what it means to be sick or not to look like a normal child. You look like a sick child when you're in treatment. To be with these kids is helpful," Patricia King said.

"What we want to do is be there for the families when they need it," Baynes said.

"I like everything. It's kinda cool," Brianna said.

So in a space showing you the seemingly impossible, kids who may do what some thought was impossible to beat their disease and become a closer family.

"Now we are family oriented. I realized with the snow to be stuck inside for three days was not a big deal. We knew how to play together, to be together and appreciate that time together," Patricia King said.

Casey Cares is now in its 15th year and recently expanded to the New York area.
