School System Audit Finds Weak Financial Controls

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- An audit of Prince George's County schools has found problems that left the system's computer network vulnerable to attack and led to $1 million in overpayments to employees.

The Washington Post reports that the Office of Legislative Audits report released Wednesday found weak financial controls and insufficient oversight. The audit also questioned a lack of documentation for $1 million in contracts.

Legislative Auditor Thomas Barnickel III says he's troubled that many problems were seen in an audit six years earlier. He says some problems are linked to the lack of long-term stability in a system that has had seven superintendents in 14 years.

A schools spokesman says Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, who was hired last year, plans to use the report as a guide for improving the system.
