FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — Four people face criminal charges for blocking a Frederick courthouse entrance to protest Dominion Resources’ plan to export natural gas.

The residents of Frederick, Clarkesville and Prince George’s County were arrested Thursday at the Frederick County Courthouse.

Police say they were protesting Dominion’s plans to build a natural gas compressor station in Myersville. Opponents say the project is mainly meant to move gas to the company’s Cove Point shipping terminal in southern Maryland for export in liquid form.

Critics say gas exports will needlessly accelerate the gas-drilling practice called hydraulic fracturing, which some blame for water pollution in other states.

Dominion says the Myersville compressor is needed to boost the flow of gas during peak demand periods. It says the Cove Point project will create thousands of jobs.
