Police Officer Shot In East Baltimore; Extremely Critical Condition

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Baltimore City police officer was shot in East Baltimore Friday. The investigation is unfolding by the minute.

Meghan McCorkell reports.

The officer was rushed to Shock Trauma, where doctors employed life-saving tactics only used in Baltimore.

Doctors say the officer is in extremely critical, but stable condition.

Police say the officer was a bystander in the 1900-block of Belair Road. Someone fired shots into his personal vehicle. He was hit multiple times in the torso.

According to WJZ's media partner, The Baltimore Sun, investigators are working in the area around a black SUV.

There is a strong police presence at Shock Trauma.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is on scene.

The mayor put a message out on Twitter, saying: "My heart is heavy for the Baltimore police officer who was injured today. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time."

The name of the injured officer has not been released. He's described as a longtime member of the Baltimore City Police Department.

Police are still searching for the suspect. No description is available.
