Man Accused Of Shooting Baltimore City Officer Turns Himself Into Police
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- In custody. The man accused of shooting a Baltimore City cop turns himself in--and says he is innocent. WJZ speaks exclusively to the suspect moments before he surrenders.
Rochelle Ritchie has the latest developments.
Gregg Thomas was labeled "Public Enemy No. 1" just about an hour before he turned himself into police. He told WJZ he is innocent and he did not shoot anyone.
In an exclusive interview with WJZ, Gregg Thomas, wanted for the shooting of Baltimore City Police Sergeant Keith Mcneill, says he is not a dangerous man and is turning himself in.
"I didn't shoot nobody. I didn't shoot nobody," Thomas said.
Police say Thomas shot Sergeant Mcneill several times Friday night as he sat in his car on North Avenue and Belair Road. The motive for the violent attack is still unclear.
The whereabouts of Gregg Thomas were unknown--until now.
Just an hour after being dubbed "Public Enemy No. 1," Thomas walked down Baltimore Street to police headquarters to turn himself in for the shooting of Sergeant Mcneill.
Ritchie: "Why did you finally make that decision?"
Thomas: "Because I ain't do nothing. I mean, I'm not going to run away from nothing. I'm here right now. I'm just going to turn myself in... decide what happens in court or whatever."
In the last 72 hours, armed SWAT teams conducted searches on several homes from east to west Baltimore, as the hunt for Thomas picked up steam.
"This coward, Gregg Thomas, is hiding somewhere, we believe, in the streets of Baltimore. And that's what I'm calling him. Gregg Thomas is a coward," City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said.
Thomas walked calmly toward police headquarters. Three officers quickly identified him and placed him under arrest.
Police say Thomas was released early from prison last summer, where he was serving a murder sentence.
"I got two daughters that I really love. And I promised them I wouldn't go back to jail. I just came home," Thomas said.
The commissioner is calling his arrest a victory for the department, the city and the family of Sgt. Mcneill.
"One less suspect, one less killer on the streets of Baltimore," Batts said.
Gregg Thomas faces several charges, including attempted murder. His sister and mother have also been taken into custody by police on outstanding drug warrants.
The commissioner says the family of Sgt. Mcneill has been informed of the arrest and thanks everyone for their prayers and support.
