Court Rules Leopold Can Run Again

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland appellate court has upheld misconduct in office convictions against former Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold, but the court has overturned part of his sentence that said he could not run for office again.

The Maryland Court of Special Appeals issued the ruling Wednesday.

According to court documents, Leopold has not been convicted of a felony or of buying or selling votes. The court says by prohibiting Leopold from being a candidate for elected office as a special condition of probation, a circuit court "improperly interfered."

Leopold resigned last year within days of being found guilty by a judge. The charges related to Leopold having a secretary empty his urine catheter bag and using members of his security detail to perform political activities while on the job.
