Md. Denies Montgomery Co. Snow Day Waiver Request
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's schools superintendent has denied Montgomery County's request for a waiver of five snow days to avoid extending the school year.
Officials say the county can submit a new request that does more to compensate for the class time students missed. The county used 10 snow days, six more than were scheduled into its regular calendar.
Schools must have a minimum of 180 days of class, but the state Board of Education allowed Superintendent Lillian Lowery to grant waivers allowing as few as 175 days this year.
Officials say Superintendent Joshua Starr will consult with the school board to decide whether to submit another request or extend the school year into summer break.
Prince George's County lost eight days and is awaiting a decision on a four-day waiver request.
