Woman Pleads Guilty To $144K Theft From Nonprofit

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Prosecutors say a 34-year-old Maryland woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $144,000 from an education nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., where she worked in accounting.

Tabitha Harley-Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md., pleaded guilty Tuesday to interstate transportation of stolen property in U.S. District Court. Prosecutors say she faces a year to 18 months in prison.

Court records show Harley-Williams created fake expense reimbursements in co-workers' names but would redirect the money to her bank accounts moments before transfers took place. The organization, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, was identified in court records as "Company A," but President Albert Gray confirmed the group's loss.

Harley-Williams worked at the organization from 2008 until last year, when she resigned before a review found losses.
