WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Zoo’s director says he’s rethinking security plans after a shooting near the popular destination.

Police say two 18-year-old men were shot blocks from the zoo after its annual Easter Monday family event, but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening. Zoo police Chief Terrell Wilson said at a community meeting Wednesday that D.C. police followed social media chatter that that there might be some activity at the zoo that day.

Residents of the surrounding neighborhood at the meeting asked why zoo officials don’t use metal detectors, search bags or restrict groups of teenagers without adult supervision.

Zoo Director Dennis Kelly says officials will be rethinking everything and these options will be considered. But Kelly notes they would fundamentally “change the zoo.”
